Flower care guide
Most floral arrangements last 4‑7 days or longer, depending on the flowers used and the care they receive. Follow these tips provided by the Society of American Florists for longer‑lasting, more vibrant blooms.
For Loose Bunches or Boxed Flowers
Keep it Cool
Keep your flowers in a cool place until you can get them in a flower food solution.
Clean & Feed
Fill a clean, deep vase with water and add flower food. Always follow the mixing directions on the packet.
Clear the Leaves
Remove leaves below the waterline. Leaves in water promote bacterial growth that limits water uptake.
The Perfect Cut
Re-cut stems by removing 1 to 2 inches with a sharp knife before placing them in your prepared vase.
For Floral Arrangements
Hydration & Nutrition
Keep the vase filled (or floral foam soaked) with water. Flower foods make blooms last longer. Do not dilute flower foods with more water than specified (usually a pint or quart).
Water Clarity
If the water becomes cloudy, replace it entirely. Re‑cut stems by 1 to 2 inches with a sharp knife or clippers (to avoid crushing them), and immediately place them back into the solution.
The Perfect Spot
Keep flowers in a cool spot away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or ceiling fans. Most flowers thrive under cool conditions.
Selecting Flowers
Look for upright, firm petals and buds that are just beginning to open.
Avoid yellow, spotted, or drooping leaves, as these are signs of age.
Woody Stems
For branches like quince, forsythia, or lilac: cut stems with sharp pruning shears and place in warm water containing fresh flower food to promote opening.
